The importance of water for birds

Water for garden birds is so important: they need it not only for drinking but also for bathing to keep their feathers clean and healthy. Many people will put food out for the birds, but very few will provide a regular supply of clean water.
One of the easiest ways to do this is with a bird bath.
Clean Water
Keeping the water clean for the birds helps to prevent them catching diseases. Ideally you should clean your bird bath every week or so, and remember to change the water every couple of days. This prevents a layer of algae building up, from dead leaves or bird droppings.
Positioning
Where you put your bird bath if very important. Birds love a bath but will only use it if they feel safe. It can help to place it near trees or bushes so they. It may also help to place baths in different places and see which is most popular.
